Finally, top with more pizza dough. Close the lid, and cook for 5 minutes.

Hint: We found that pressing the waffle iron lid down for the first 30 seconds helped evenly brown the pizza waffles.

Variations

From vegetarian to meat lovers, and more, there are so many different ways to switch up this recipe. Below, you’ll find some ideas to get started.

  • Vegetarian – Load your waffle with sautéed mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, black olives, and diced tomatoes. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning and top with shredded mozzarella cheese.
  • Meat-Lover’s – Add cooked and crumbled sausage, pepperoni slices, bacon bits, and sliced ham to your dough. Serve with marinara sauce.
  • Mediterranean – Top your waffle with roasted red peppers, artichoke hearts, Kalamata olives, cherry tomatoes, and feta cheese. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of oregano.

Equipment

For this recipe, you will need a waffle iron. We have a Cuisinart waffle maker that we’ve used for years, and it works great.

Storage

Leftover pizza waffles can be stored in an airtight, freezer-safe container for up to 4 days in the refrigerator and up to 3 months in the freezer.

Top tips

  • Use nonstick cooking spray or brush the waffle iron with vegetable oil before adding the pizza dough.
  • Don’t overload the pizza waffle with toppings.
  • Cook the pizza waffles until golden brown. Cooking times will vary based on your waffle iron. Ours takes about 5 minutes.
