Why You’ll Love Oreo Rice Crispy Treats

  • Even if you’re not the biggest Oreo fan (like my husband), you’ll still love these Oreo Rice Krispies treats. I just can’t get enough of the crunchy cereal, ooey-gooey marshmallows, and a big load of Oreos in each bite.
  • With just a handful of ingredients and 10 minutes to whip up, they’re the very definition of a quick dessert. So you don’t have to worry about doing that whole grocery store quest.
  • They’re seriously one of those can’t eat-just-one desserts. You know the kind where you have to put away so you don’t eat the whole tray.
  • Easy to make for a crowd. And certain to please a crowd. Make them for pot lucks, office parties, Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Easter. They just work!

Ingredients

Bowls of ingredients for Oreo Rice Krispie treats including cereal, marshmallows, butter, Oreos, and vanilla.
  • Rice Cereal – we’ve used both the national and generic brands. The results are similar.
  • Marshmallows – use mini marshmallows because the melt faster.
  • Oreos – I have to say that real Oreos taste much better.
  • Butter – unsalted butter.
  • Vanilla Extract – adds a professional baker-quality touch. We’ve tried them with and without vanilla and it definitely makes a difference.
  • Condensed Milk – the secret ingredient for extra rich and gooey gourmet treats.
  • Salt – a pinch of salt makes them taste just a little sweeter. That’s a good thing!

How to Make Oreo Rice Crispy Treats

Prepare a 9×13-inch pan by spraying it with butter cooking spray. Set aside.

Place the Oreos in a sandwich bag and crush them using a rolling pin or mallet.

In a large pot over medium heat, melt the butter and add salt. Use a rubber spatula to spread the butter up the sides to prevent the mixture from sticking.

Add the sweetened condensed milk to the melted butter and stir until well combined.

Add the 12 ounces of mini marshmallows. Stir over medium heat until the mixture is completely melted. Then remove from the heat.

Add the vanilla extract and stir until well combined.

Quickly mix in the Oreos.

Pour the mixture into the prepared 9×13-inch pan. Wet your hands, shake off the excess water, and use your hands to gently press the Rice Krispies into the pan. Don’t press them down too hard, or they’ll be hard to bite into.

Add some extra Oreos on top. Let the treats cool at room temperature for an hour.

Using the rubber spatula, remove the treats from the pan. Use a knife to cut them into squares. Enjoy!

Top Tip

Although they’re really easy to make, there are a few things that can make or break your treats.

I know it’s tempting raise the heat when melting the marshmallows, but keep the heat low, it’s still a quick process, and you’ll avoid turning your treats into bricks.

Lightly press the treats mixture into the pan. Pressing too hard will cause your treats will make them hard.

Always use fresh marshmallows.

Storage

Place leftovers in an airtight container on the counter for up to 3 days ( I doubt they’ll last that long).

For longer storage, refrigerate for up to a week or freeze for up to 2 months. If you store them in the freezer, be sure to wrap them individually and place them in a freezer bag.

FAQ

Can I make them ahead?

Sure you can! If you will be bringing it to a holiday or party, then make them a day or two in advance.

Are they okay to freeze?

Absolutely! We do this all the time. All you have to do is wrap each one individually, place them in a freezer bag, and freeze for up to 2 months.

Why did my treats end up hard?

There are a few reasons why Krispie treats end up too hard. For starters, you may have overheated the marshmallow mixture. Secondly, you may pressed them into the pan too hard.

I have an old bag of marshmallows. Can I use those?

Nah. You’ll want to use fresh marshmallows. The old ones can make your treats too dense.
