  • Asparagus – When looking for fresh asparagus, look for bright green spears with purple hues. The spears should be firm.
  • Bacon – Go for regular-cut bacon instead of thick-cut. It’s easier to cut, wrap, and cook in a predictable manner.
  • Brown Sugar – We use light brown sugar for this recipe, but dark brown sugar can also work well.

How to Make Easy Bacon Wrapped Asparagus

Now that you know what you need for this recipe, let’s talk about how to make it. Below you’ll find instructions accompanied by step-by-step images showing you exactly how to make these bacon-wrapped delights. But first, you’ll want to preheat your oven to 390 degrees.

Cut the bacon down the middle along its length as shown in the image. You don’t need to use a whole slice of bacon for each spear of asparagus.

So, when it comes to asparagus, you don’t want to cut it. Instead, hold them towards the bottom and bend; it will snap. Magical!

Next, you’ll want to wrap each asparagus spear starting at the top just below the crown. As you wrap, slightly overlap the bacon.

Finally, roll the bacon-wrapped asparagus in brown sugar and press it firmly onto the bacon, ensuring it is completely coated. Then place them on a parchment-lined sheet pan and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

When they are done, use a pair of tongs to remove them from the baking pan.

Storage & Reheating

First, you’ll need to cool the asparagus to room temperature. Then place them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

To reheat, preheat the oven to 350 degrees and bake for about 10 minutes or until heated through. Or, place them in the air fryer at 390 degrees for 3 to 5 minutes.

Avoid the microwave to prevent sogginess.

Top tip

When securing the bacon to the asparagus, slightly overlap it as shown in the images above. This not only makes the asparagus look nice but also prevents the bacon from unravelling.

FAQ

What type of bacon is best for wrapping asparagus?

Regular cut bacon is best for making this bacon-wrapped asparagus recipe. You won’t be able to wrap the thick cut bacon as easily.

Can I make bacon-wrapped asparagus ahead of time?

I wouldn’t. This is an appetizer that’s best served immediately. The asparagus can become mushy when reheating.

Ingredients

  • 1 Pd Asparagus
  • 8 Slices of Bacon
  • ⅓ Cup Brown Sugar
  • Toothpicks

Instructions

  • You want to start by rinsing the asparagus thoroughly under cold running water to remove any dirt or sand from both the stalks and tips.
  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  • To remove the tough, woody ends of the asparagus, gently bend them a few inches from the stem end. They will naturally break at the right spot. Discard the stems.
  • Cut the bacon slices in half lengthwise. Take a piece of bacon and wrap it around the asparagus, making sure to overlap the bacon. Secure with a toothpick at the bottom. Continue until all the asparagus is wrapped in bacon.
  • In a shallow pan, add the brown sugar. Coat the bacon-wrapped asparagus in the brown sugar. Make sure each is completely coated.
  • Place the asparagus on the baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes. Flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes. Serve immediately, enjoy!

Notes

  • We found it easier to use a toothpick to secure the end of the bacon to the stem. You don’t want to put the toothpick all the way through the asparagus, just halfway.
  • Depending on the thickness of the asparagus, you may need to adjust the cooking time a little bit.
  • You can also set the asparagus under the broiler for 1-2 minutes if you want to crisp up the bacon even more.
  • We recommend making and eating these the same day. If you have to reheat the asparagus, do so in the air fryer at 390 degrees for 2-3 minutes.
