You’ll want to keep these protein bites on deck all year long because they just work for all situations. Falling asleep at the kids’ play? Grab a bite. Spending more time staring at the clock than doing your work? Grab a bite. Trying to find an excuse to tap out on that last set of squats? Grab two!

This protein snack is so good, but we have a circle full of winning snacks around here. So there’s plenty to choose from, like our protein peanut butter balls (that we sometimes dip in dark chocolate), and our protein rice crispy treats (that we also like to dip in dark chocolate), which make EARTH’s most perfect treat a bit healthier.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe…

  • Healthy snacks only work if they taste good. And these chocolate balls taste great! They’re all rich and fudgy, but instead of that sugar coma you get from a candy bar, these will actually keep you energized.
  • They’re super easy to make in just minutes. Homemade snacks must be easy to make with simple ingredients, or you’ll just end up going back to the store-bought stuff.
  • Our chocolate protein bars aren’t chalky and hard to eat. They pack a protein punch, but we didn’t try to cram 20 grams of it into each bite.
  • This recipe is a nice starting point, but you can easily make it your own. Dip them in dark chocolate (60% cacao or higher), or add in crushed nuts or crushed Oreos. It’s all up to you!

Ingredients

Ingredients for chocolate protein balls including oats, peanut butter, cocoa powder, cinnamon, chocolate chips, and honey.
  • Old-Fashioned Oats – quick or instant oats won’t work as well in this recipe.
  • Peanut Butter – we used creamy.
  • Chocolate Protein Powder
  • Cocoa
  • Honey
  • Mini Chocolate Chips

How to Store

For easy storage, place the balls in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. Or you can do what we like to do and make a bunch of them and freeze.

To freeze them, you’ll want to place them on a parchment-lined cookie sheet and freeze until firm, then transfer to a zipper freezer bag or freezer-safe container.

Top Tips

A couple of tips for you:

  • You’ll want to chill the mixture before rolling to make it easier to form balls.
  • Are they too soft? Add some more oats, a sprinkle at a time.
  • Are they too firm? Add some milk, a drizzle at a time.

FAQ

Can I make them in advance?

For sure! These are among our go-to meal-prep snacks. We like to make a big batch and freeze it, then it’s easy snacking until we run out of them. Then we do it again.

I only have vanilla protein powder. Can I use it instead?

Yeah, no problem. To keep it chocolatey, simply add a tablespoon of cocoa powder to the mixture.

Do I have to use peanut butter?

Nah. You have lots of options for nut butters like almond butter and sunflower seed butter. But, they may make the mixture too soft. If that happens, add some more oats. Just a little bit at a time.

My mixture is too firm/soft. How do I fix it?

This happens. If the mix is too soft, add oats a little at a time until it firms up. If it’s too firm, add some milk. Once again, a bit at a time.
