This Strawberry Shortcake with Angel Food Cake is a simple summer dessert with strawberries, light and airy cake, and whipped cream. It’s perfectly sweet, a little tart, and fluffy. One of our favorite old-school desserts that the whole family loves.

Make this dessert any time strawberries are in season, and you need a guaranteed win. Think Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Father’s Day, and 4th of July. It’s also great for backyard BBQs and cookouts or any random Friday dessert. It just works!
If you’re planning a dessert spread, they pair nicely with other elegant yet simple desserts like strawberry cheesecake cupcakes and individual peach cobbler.

Why You’ll Love Strawberry Shortcake with Angel Food Cake
- Angel food cake is light as a feather. So having a serving won’t weigh you down like pound cake (which is buttery and delicious).
- The strawberry sauce will bring people back for a second serving because it hits that balance of sweet and tart. It’s always nice seeing people go back for more.
- If you’re not sure what to make, this one is a sure thing. Everyone grew up eating some version of this whether it was strawberry shortcake with pound cake, or strawberry shortcake with Bisquick biscuits.

How to Make Strawberry Shortcake with Angel Food Cake
Follow the instructions to make the strawberry sauce.
Slice the angel food cake into 12 even pieces.

Place one slice on a serving plate. Spoon strawberry sauce over the top, then add whipped cream.
Repeat with the remaining ingredients to make additional servings. Enjoy!
Top Tip
After you make the strawberry topping, allow it to chill in the fridge for around 30 minutes. This helps the berries release more juice and flavor.
Storage
Store the strawberry sauce and cake separately for up to 3 days. If already assembled, eat by the next day before it gets soggy.

FAQs
You can, but I prefer fresh berries for this recipe. Thawed frozen berries will have a mushy texture. Fresh strawberries stay firmer, even after making the topping.
If you’re baking the cake, making it a day or two ahead of time is fine. But I wouldn’t make the strawberry mixture more than a day in advance. Do not assemble in advance
