Classic Margarita recipe

  • Facebook
  • X

Made with your favorite tequila, freshly squeezed lime juice, and a little glug of simple syrup, this Classic Margarita is the cocktail that doesn’t miss.

It’s versatile. Perfect for those loud parties that last way too long (where you’re waiting for that last person to leave) or an evening where you just want to unwind.

I like to think of Cinco de Mayo as the official kickoff of margarita season. If you’re a fan like me, you’ll be making them for BBQs, taco night, sports events, or even just warm evenings on the patio (hopefully with great company).

And before I send you off to Margaritaville, you’ll want to check out some of our other grown up drinks like our strawberry margarita or jalapeno strawberry margarita.

Why You’ll Love Our Classic Margarita Recipe

  • What’s great about our classic margarita is that it focuses on getting the balance right. You have that sweet, tart, and boozy combo working together like tacos and Tuesdays.
  • You’ll love the simplicity of this drink. There aren’t any complicated ingredients or techniques. Just a few basic ingredients, a quick little shake, shake, shake, and before you know it, you’re pouring drinks and telling bad jokes (is that just me lol).
  • The classic margarita is easy to make batch after batch for a crowd. The only downside is that you’re gonna be the bartender all night long.

How to make a Classic Margarita

Run a lime wedge around the rims of your glasses and dip them in salt. Set aside.

In a shaker, combine some ice, tequila, lime juice, and simple syrup. Shake for 15-20 seconds.

Fill glasses with ice and pour the margarita over the top. Garnish with lime wedges and serve immediately.

Top Tips

No cocktail shaker? No problem. You can still serve your drinks shaken not stirred. Just add your ingredients to a mason jar, seal the lid, and shake it.

This works well in a pinch…but you’re gonna want that cocktail shaker soon enough.

FAQ

What is the best type of tequila for a margarita?

For this recipe, I recommend a good blanco tequila (also called white tequila). It has a clean, bright flavor that works great with lime.

Can I make margaritas ahead of time?

Although I prefer to make margaritas fresh, you can make them ahead of time if you want to make a large back for a party. This is a great idea if you plan to serve it in a drink dispenser.

Should I salt the rim?

Salt elevates the flavor and adds balance to the drink. It’s optional but I recommend it.
